The Pig and Butcher
80 Liverpool Road, London N1
It’s been getting rave reviews…
As you might gather from its name, this “handsome” pub five minutes from Angel Tube station is all about meat, says Rosamund Urwin in the London Evening Standard; it is sourced directly from British suppliers and butchered on site, before chefs start working their magic. We started off with rillettes which – burnt toast aside – were a “triumph”; and an endive, orange and blood pudding salad. This was an odd combination but the black pudding was the best I’ve had in years. Our main was a shared dish of Windsor pork belly with a huge mound of roast potatoes, carrots and crackling, plus Yorkshire pudding and a gratin of cheese and peas – “each part a dream”. There was a vegetarian option – pearl barley risotto with chestnut mushrooms, peas and goat curd – which was good, though not as sumptuous. Puddings of Eton Mess and pistachio praline with chocolate mousse were “well-executed”. Altogether, this was a meal “worth getting fat for”.
Dinner with wine and service, around £40 a head.
